Why Are Fuel Thieves Targeting Trucks?

The first reason lies in the size of the truck's fuel tank. Fuel thieves, despite the risks involved, aim to earn more with each successful attempt. Therefore, they opt for trucks with large fuel tanks. Considering the risks inherent in fuel theft, many perpetrators believe in targeting trucks with sizable tanks. Passenger cars typically have fuel tanks with capacities of only a few dozen liters, while truck tanks can hold several hundred liters. If a fuel thief manages to siphon all the diesel from a truck, it's a significant haul.

The second reason is the anti-theft design in passenger cars. Passenger vehicles prioritize safety, securing not only the interiors but also the fuel tanks. Thieves find it difficult to escape if a car is locked, leading them to target trucks. Trucks don't usually have the same anti-theft mechanisms in their fuel tanks. This is why fuel thieves choose trucks over passenger cars. While the gasoline in a passenger car might seem just as valuable, trucks offer a better opportunity for theft as their fuel tanks are less protected.

The third reason relates to the low flashpoint of gasoline. It's currently summertime. Gasoline, when exposed to open flames, is more likely to catch fire spontaneously, putting the thieves at risk. Fuel thieves prioritize their own safety during theft attempts and often choose diesel over gasoline. Gasoline has a higher likelihood of spontaneous combustion compared to diesel at similar temperatures. For safety reasons, thieves tend to prefer diesel over gasoline.

The fourth reason is the external location of truck fuel tanks. Passenger cars usually have enclosed fuel tanks, making it challenging for thieves to access. However, truck fuel tanks are externally situated, making it relatively easy for a thief to siphon the diesel after unscrewing the tank cap. Many truck drivers, after long and tiring journeys, often rest in their seats or at service areas, presenting an ideal opportunity for fuel theft.
