Electronic Rearview Mirrors are Prone to Crash and Cause Safety Problems?
In fact, as early as 2018, since the Electronic Rearview Mirror appeared abroad, many people are not optimistic about this technology, and some even worry that if the side mirror monitor crashes or the picture is stuck like a mobile phone, will it bring a huge security risk?
If you simply look at it from the perspective of "crash, picture delay, and picture delay", there is indeed a certain risk. However, these problems are actually included in the focus of technology development as early as the beginning of the design, and generally before the application of new technologies, risk assessment will be carried out to avoid these possible risks.
According to the relevant person in charge of Mecron, the risk assessment of the electronic rearview mirror mainly involves many aspects. Taking Mecron rearview mirror as an example, its electronic rearview mirror bus design has two sets of redundant systems to ensure safety, simple understanding, electronic rearview mirror has two sets of independent operation of the core, one of the systems fails, the other system can also operate independently, to ensure the normal transmission of the picture.
Fristly, when the E-Mirror has a serious failure, such as the picture lag phenomenon, the rearview mirror system will automatically black the screen immediately, and the cue card friend contact the nearby service station to solve it. Of course, the probability of this system going wrong is extremely low.
Secondly, the screen delay. It is reported that in the previous risk assessment of Mercedes-Benz trucks, there is a "image delay", which requires no less than the regulatory standard, and in the corresponding European standard, the delay of the electronic rearview mirror is required to be less than 200 milliseconds.
The new indirect field of view standard now implemented clearly requires that when the ambient temperature is around 22 degrees, the delay time of the electronic rearview mirror should be less than 200 milliseconds, and the screen display picture is not less than 30 frames. Therefore, you do not have to worry about the electronic rearview mirror screen delay.
At the 2022 Hannover Motor Show, both Mercedes' MirrorCAM 2.0 and MAN's OptiView electronic rearview mirror system are getting some technical updates.
Wide-angle Display
For example, technical upgrades in the rearview mirror itself. For example, a number of cameras with different focal segments are integrated, and a telephoto camera is used to capture the rear view of the side of the vehicle and the rear of the trailer. The wide-angle camera can collect wide-angle images around the vehicle to facilitate the driver to make decisions in advance. For our ordinary rear-view mirror at this stage, when the trailer turning Angle is too large, it is basically unable to see the rear situation of the trailer. And even the view of the trailer on the other side cannot be observed directly.
At the software level, it integrates more auxiliary driving warning functions, that is, the linkage between the side assistance system and the electronic rearview mirror system
MAN OptiView also integrates warning displays for steering Assist, lane Change Assist and lane Change collision avoidance Assist on both sides of the display. Man's AEB system can even work with the OptiView electronic rearview mirror system, which in previous Man tests simulated a cyclist passing by a truck and applied automatic braking based on dual confirmation from the side radar and camera system.
Of course, Mercedes trucks are also designed in this way. When a potentially dangerous situation is detected, the MirrorCam display on the passenger side will display different colored warning signs depending on the danger level. If the driver ignores all of these signals (for whatever reason) and the truck continues to move toward a "moving pedestrian or object," the new generation of Sideguard Assist can actively intervene with the braking system until it comes to a stop.
