Complete Wireless Rear View Car Camera System: A DIY Installation Guide
Rearview cameras have rapidly evolved into an essential safety feature, now becoming a standard in many modern cars. In the next few years, all new vehicles will mandate backup cameras. However, for older cars without this system, installing a rear view camera can be a DIY project. The ideal choice for installation is a wireless rear view camera, utilizing existing rear license plate mounting holes. Compared to wired counterparts, wireless installation offers convenience as you avoid the complexity of routing extensive video cables throughout the vehicle.
Tools Required:
Blade or screwdriver for license plate removal and camera mounting.
Double-sided adhesive tape for fixing the transmitter or power supply.
Drill driver for mounting the wireless transmitter.
Rubber liner to protect wires from drilled hole edges.
Insulating tape for power cable splicing.
Available 12V power output port for dashboard monitor connection.
Each wireless rear view camera system comprises three main components: a camera, a transmitter, and a video display/monitor. Here's a step-by-step guide to installing a general wireless backup camera system:
1. Mount the Rear View Camera:
Install the camera on the rear license plate using the plate mounting screws.
Route the camera's power wires through the existing license plate light hole, reconnect the light, and route the wires to the nearest rear taillight housing.
Identify the backup light wire and connect it to the rear view camera power wire, ensuring the system activates only when reversing for safety reasons.
Mount the wireless transmitter in the vehicle's rear and connect it to the camera wires.
2. Install the Camera Monitor:
The monitor can easily plug into a 12V power output port, such as a cigarette lighter, for power supply.
Mount the monitor on the dashboard or windshield using the provided base.
Alternatively, certain camera monitors resemble a replacement digital rear view mirror, requiring mounting over the existing mirror.
To conceal wiring, route the power cord through the headliner, A-pillar, underneath the dash, and connect it to the nearest 12V power plug or vehicle's wiring.
3. Test the Rear View Camera System:
Start the car and check the monitor during reverse; it should display the captured rear view camera video automatically.
When driving to other positions, the camera monitor screen should turn off.
Installing a wireless rear view car camera system enhances parking and reversing safety, making it a sought-after solution in the market. With your new aftermarket system in place, parking becomes more secure and manageable.
