How to Ensure Safe Towing of a Trailer Caravan

Towing a trailer caravan on the road is not always straightforward in our country, so what should be taken into consideration when using a trailer caravan?

Connection Device for Trailer Caravan

First and foremost, the connection between the caravan and the towing vehicle must be stable and reliable. The fully loaded weight of the trailer caravan should not exceed 85% of the weight of the towing vehicle.

Automobile manufacturers should clearly indicate the maximum vehicle weight that can be towed. (As mentioned above, it should not exceed 85% of the weight of the vehicle itself.) Also, ensure that the connection device on the towing vehicle is installed by professionals. Do not exceed the recommended weight at the trailer caravan hitch ball. The maximum weight is generally considered to be 7% of the total weight of the vehicle after loading. The stability of the vehicle during towing depends on the load of the caravan. Typically, heavier items should be placed towards the front and should not be placed at the rear or in elevated positions. Proper placement of items can help maintain the relationship between the caravan and the towing vehicle.

Install stabilizers, but remember, vehicle stabilizers do not replace careful arrangement of luggage in the vehicle.

Ensure that the vehicle's tires are in good condition. Unlike car tires, trailer caravan tires do not wear out due to lower mileage. Instead, some dangerous situations occur in vehicles with low usage rates and models that have been in use for too long.

Check for cracks, fractures, etc., and replace the tires every five years, even if they appear to be in good condition. Ensure that wheel nuts and other components are not loose.

Remember that it takes more time to stop when the towing vehicle and the trailer caravan are combined, so maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front while driving, and slow down gently for braking, unless in an emergency situation. Maintain a speed of 96 kilometers per hour on roads with a speed limit of 112 kilometers per hour, and a speed of 80 kilometers per hour on roads with a speed limit of 96 kilometers per hour. (On Chinese highways with a speed limit of 120 kilometers per hour, the safe speed for towing a trailer caravan is 105 kilometers per hour.)

Avoid rapid acceleration while driving, as this is most likely to cause vehicle sway. If the vehicle begins to sway, do not accelerate or brake, release the pedals, do not grip the steering wheel tightly until the sway is under control, then accelerate slowly.

Finally, regardless of the mileage traveled by the trailer caravan, it should be taken to a professional service center for a full vehicle inspection every year.
